Nigerians were in for a surprise when on 21 September 2016, Canadian singer, The Weeknd announced the name of his third studio album “Starboy“, with its first single with the same title featuring French electronic music duo Daft Punk.
Nigerian Twitter busted into shouts and arguments on why The Weeknd should not use the moniker “Starboy“. They were right, of course.
Their Nigerian darling, Wizkid was the only Starboy they know. Any other Starboy is fake and should be disregarded.
Even Wizkid was pissed to the extent he called The Weeknd “Fraud Nigga” even though he later deleted that tweet. He later claimed “Everyone is a Star” 😂😂
There’s a whole new mystery behind the name Starboy. Fact is Wizkid started using that name.
After separating from EMEWizkid established his own record label and decided to name the imprint “Starboy“.
With label acts such as Maleek Berry, Legendury Beats and L.A.X , Wizkid was the honcho. But that was far way back in 2013. And by the time Wizkid collaborated with Drake and Skepta on Ojuelebga remix, it was still on the Starboy imprint. It was evident.
Even after that, Wizkid has always been repping the Starboy insignia even before we all knew The Weeknd.
While his fans in America might want to dispute this, Not too many people listen to The Weeknd. But like a thief in the night, The Weeknd announces an album, a single with the title as Starboy and shoots a video for it.
Well planned move. What’s his advantage? He’s won several Grammys, has an Oscar nomination and a backing from the powers that be. He even had to secure the support of Wizkid’s new friendDrake who echoed it “Give it up for the Real Starboy” while they were on tour together. Is there any fake Starboy?
That was two years ago, now The Weeknd is serious about this. The Weeknd has filed for a court injuction to stop anyone from using his trademark Starboy.

According to TMZ, Eymun Talasazan wants to trademark the “Starboy” for his comic and is using that to hinge on the success of the musician. This is coming 11 days after Marvel Comics announcement on their collaboration the “Starboy” comic.
Apparently, this won’t have happened if Wizkid had patented the name. Wizkid has failed to ‘own’ the name by copyrighting it for business, and also releasing records with that title for street credibility.
We can’t continue to hate on a successful US singer for stretching his hands and claiming what no one truly made theirs.
So who simply has the bragging rights to call himself the Starboy?

Who Is The Real Starboy?

Wizkid? The Weeknd? or Eymun Talasazan we don’t know.
