“I Can Sacrifice Myself” — Makinde Speaks on Rescue of Abducted Oyo Pupils

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that he is willing to sacrifice his own life if it would help secure the release of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

The governor made the statement on Tuesday while addressing a peaceful group of protesters led by social commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, at his residence in Ibadan.

The protest was organised to draw attention to the plight of the abducted victims and to urge authorities to intensify efforts toward their rescue.

Speaking to the protesters, Governor Makinde said security agencies were actively working with available intelligence and remained committed to ensuring the victims return home safely.

Responding to suggestions from some demonstrators who offered to join rescue operations, the governor stressed that authorities were focused on carrying out coordinated efforts rather than taking actions that could endanger lives.

Expressing his commitment to the rescue mission, Makinde stated:

“I can sacrifice myself for the release of the abducted children; I am almost 60 years old.”

He also expressed confidence that the current security strategy could lead to the safe recovery of the victims without further casualties.

According to the governor, information available to the government indicates that there have been no additional deaths among the abductees since the earlier killing of a Mathematics teacher during the incident.

Makinde maintained that negotiating with kidnappers was not the preferred option and reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies until the victims are reunited with their families.

VeryDarkMan also pledged support for ongoing efforts, stating that he and other young Nigerians were willing to volunteer in the fight against kidnapping and insecurity.

The governor’s remarks have since generated reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern and calling for the safe return of the abducted children and teachers.
