A lady has shared a shocking experience she encountered while travelling outside Lagos, revealing how an attempt to comfort a distressed stranger almost got her wrongly labelled as a thief.
According to her account, the incident began when she noticed a woman in public raising an alarm over a missing mobile phone. The woman appeared visibly upset as she described the device and appealed to people around for help.
Moved by sympathy, the lady approached her and offered words of comfort, hoping the missing phone would eventually be found.
However, the situation took an unexpected turn.
While speaking with the distressed woman, the lady’s own phone became visible. Coincidentally, it was the same model as the missing device.
Without hesitation, the woman suddenly accused her of stealing the phone.
Within moments, a crowd gathered and tensions escalated as people began confronting the lady based solely on the accusation. Despite repeatedly explaining that the phone belonged to her and that she had only tried to help, many appeared ready to believe otherwise.
The situation only changed when a man stepped in and urged the crowd to listen before making conclusions.
After the misunderstanding was cleared up, the lady expected an apology.
Instead, she said the woman simply looked at her and said:
“Just go, abeg. I thought maybe I’ve found my phone.”
No apology. No explanation.
Reflecting on the incident, the lady said what stayed with her most was how quickly public suspicion turned against her despite her good intentions.
Her story has since sparked conversations online about false accusations, mob reactions, and the importance of verifying facts before judging others.
