“Please Don’t Fast If You Want a Baby” — Doctor’s Fertility Advice Sparks Mixed Reactions

A medical doctor identified as Dr. Abassi has stirred conversations online after advising women who are trying to conceive to avoid fasting, citing its potential impact on reproductive hormones.

In a video shared on social media, the doctor urged women hoping to become pregnant to prioritize their reproductive health, explaining that fasting could interfere with hormonal processes involved in ovulation.

According to him, the female body requires specific hormones to regulate the release of eggs and prepare them for fertilization. He warned that prolonged fasting may affect these hormonal activities, potentially reducing a woman’s chances of conceiving.

“If you are expecting the fruit of the womb, I’m begging you, please do not fast. As a woman, do not fast,” he said.

Explaining further, Dr. Abassi noted that hormones such as Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH) play crucial roles during ovulation.

“When a woman is ovulating, she needs certain hormones. She needs FSH, follicle-stimulating hormone, that is what tells the ovary it’s about time for you to release the next egg.

“She also needs luteinizing hormone, which prepares the egg and gets it ready for fertilization by a sperm,” he explained.

His comments have since generated mixed reactions across social media platforms. While some users agreed with the doctor’s position and praised him for shedding light on fertility-related health concerns, others argued that fasting remains an important religious practice and should not be discouraged.

Reacting to the video, one social media user wrote, “Many women have fasted and still had children.

Another added, “There should be a balance between faith and medical advice.”

The discussion continues to trend online as many Nigerians debate the relationship between fertility, reproductive health, and religious fasting.
