The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits, describing the incident as a tragic loss to both the state and the nation.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu.
According to the statement, the retired military officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while being held captive by his abductors.
“The deceased retired general died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension,” the statement said.
The government noted that despite efforts by the state administration and security agencies to secure his release, the situation ended in tragedy.
Dr. Mu’azu described the abduction and subsequent death of the former senior military commander as a devastating loss, not only to his family and Katsina State but also to Nigeria as a whole.
Reacting to the development, Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, expressed deep sorrow over the retired general’s death, describing it as a painful moment for the state and a reminder of the persistent security challenges facing the country.
The governor extended his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul.
Governor Radda also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to tackle banditry and other criminal activities across the state.
He assured residents that efforts would be intensified to ensure those responsible for the abduction are brought to justice.
“The government remains resolute in its determination to eliminate banditry and safeguard lives and property across Katsina State,” the governor stated.
He further urged citizens to continue supporting security agencies by providing credible intelligence and cooperating in the ongoing fight against insecurity.
The death of Major General Abubakar underscores the persistent security crisis in northern Nigeria, where armed bandit groups continue to carry out kidnappings, attacks on communities, and other violent crimes despite ongoing military operations and security interventions.
