A UK-based Nigerian woman has shared an emotional account online after her husband reportedly left their home and filed for divorce following a disagreement over her daughter’s upcoming wedding.
According to the woman, the issue began with wedding discussions involving her 26-year-old daughter, but later grew into a deeper conflict about family, sacrifice, and recognition.
She explained that 16 years ago, her Nigerian ex-husband abandoned her and their daughter when the child was only 10 years old.
At the time, she said life became extremely difficult for them financially and emotionally.
She said she later met her current husband, a white man who accepted both her and her daughter and became fully involved in raising the child.
According to her, he provided for them, supported the family financially, and became the only father her daughter has truly known throughout the last 16 years.
Now that her daughter is preparing for marriage into what she described as a wealthy and respected Yoruba family in the UK, discussions began around traditional introduction and wedding arrangements.
The woman said she insisted that her daughter’s biological father should be included in key parts of the ceremony.
Explaining her decision, she said:
“When the family started discussing traditional introduction and wedding plans, I made it clear that my daughter’s biological father must be involved in important parts of the ceremony, including walking her down the aisle, so we can present a proper and cohesive Yoruba family image.”
She said her husband reacted strongly to the idea and felt hurt after everything he had done over the years.
According to her, he believed that as the man who stayed, raised her daughter, and supported the family, he deserved that role.
However, she said she viewed the matter differently.
She explained:
“I still love my husband. He has been a good man to both me and my daughter. But for my daughter’s future and this marriage into such a prominent family, I feel we need to present the right image. I cannot compromise on that.”
The disagreement eventually turned into an argument.
During the exchange, she admitted saying words she now regrets.
“I never asked for his charity. He chose to step in, and I accepted because I had a child to protect.”
According to her, that statement deeply hurt her husband.
She said he later accused her of deception and claimed she never truly appreciated his role in their lives.
Shortly afterward, she was reportedly served divorce papers, and her husband also withdrew the financial support he had initially planned to contribute toward the wedding.
She admitted the situation has left her emotionally overwhelmed.
“I still love him… My heart is heavy.”
The story has since sparked mixed reactions online, with many debating whether family roles should be determined by biology, upbringing, or both.
